Our Story
Roxboro Presbyterian Church was organized by Orange Presbytery on June 19, 1892. Rev. Dr. J. Henry Smith, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Greensboro, moderated the organizing meeting. In 1894, a white frame church building was built on South Lamar Street, with much of the carpentry work being done by members. The first resident pastor came to Roxboro in 1916. From its inception, Roxboro Presbyterian has been connected to the community around it. During the Depression, 70 percent of the collection taken up each week was used to help the poor of the church and community. In 1946 the congregation voted unanimously to proceed with a new building. In 1947, the current Lamar Street site was chosen for the new sanctuary. A large donation was made in honor of Mrs. Carrie Holt Mebane and Mr. James Kerr Mebane. To show its appreciation of the Mebane family, the church name was change in 1950 to “Mebane Memorial Presbyterian Church”. That name would remain in effect until 2000, when the name was changed back to Roxboro Presbyterian Church. In 2001, Roxboro Presbyterian Church dedicated the Sabbath Garden and a granite sign with the new name. Since returning to its roots as Roxboro Presbyterian Church, the congregation has sought to be a growing family of faith that supports one another and the community of Roxboro. Church activities have included family dinners, the Hanging of the Greens at Christmas, church picnics, youth trips, and a variety of Sunday school classes. Contributions to the community have included the collection of food for those in need, the donation of time to community organizations such as the Christian Help Center, financial support to My Life Matters, the hosting of an Alcoholics Anonymous group, a partnership with South Elementary School, and participation in the Backpack Buddies program. As we look to the future, we hope to continue to grow in faith as we seek to serve each other and our neighbors near and far. |

We live out our call through Reformed worship, the study of God’s Word, and our mission work. In all things, we seek to give praise to God. We do this first and foremost through traditional worship. We also seek to find deeper connection with God through the enhancement of the worship arts. We seek to connect with each other and become more committed disciples of Christ. We do this through the study of God’s word. We seek to form deeper connections between younger and older. We seek to care for each friend and member of the congregation in need. We seek to share the love of Christ through our connection and commitment to the community. We seek to be good stewards of our resources. We seek to grow in faith and numbers so that we may continue to carry on God’s work. To all this we commit our time, our talents, and our treasures. To God be the glory.
