ARE YOU FEELING WEARY?
The Gospel of Luke tells the story of Jesus's birth as it interweaves with the story of John's birth. In these two birth narratives, we experience the full range of human emotions. As the pastorists (pastors who are artists) at A Sanctified Art noted, these emotions include isolation, fear, and disbelief, as well as connection, trust and joy. As they studied these scriptures from Luke's gospel, they realized that "we need to acknowledge the weariness of our world while also seeking real and daily moments of joy. We need to remember that all of life can be a prayer." In response to this realization, they began to ask themselves, "How does a weary world rejoice?" During the Advent season, in the weeks leading up to Christmas, we will be considering a different theme each week that will help us answer this question of how we find joy, "even in the midst of difficult circumstances." So, regardless of where you are this holiday season, whether you are weary or joyful, burned out or grateful, we hope we can join together and seek to bring joy to a weary world. You are welcome to worship at RPC each Sunday morning, and on Christmas Eve. If worshiping in community is not what brings you joy right now, you can still be part of what is happening at RPC this holiday season.
If you would like, follow us on Facebook and keep an eye out as we post a new action to take each day.
Or, you can participate by downloading and joining with the whole congregation as we count down the days to Christ's birth with special Advent calendars from our friends at A Sanctified Art. We have calendars for children and adults and youth.
Here are the scriptures and themes for each week:
December 3rd: Luke 1:1-23 and Psalm 80:1-7, 17-19
We acknowledge our weariness
December 10th: Luke 1:24-45 and Isaiah 40:1-11
We find joy in connection
December 17th: Luke 1:57-66 and Psalm 126
We allow ourselves to be amazed
December 24th (morning worship): Luke 1:46-55 and Luke 1:67-80
We sing stories of hope
December 24th (Christmas Eve candlelight service): Luke 2:1-20
